Questions for Admission

Q1 I want to study in bachelor’s degree and Master Degree at NTUE, how can I enroll in?

If you’re a foreign student want to study in bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Doctoral Degree at NTUE, based on you’re the qualifications of admission can divided into International Students and Overseas Chinese Students.
For the admission of International Students please refer to “International Student Services” > “Degree International Students”>“Admission”
For Overseas Chinese Students (including those from Hong Kong and Macau) admission please refer to the Admission website of Overseas Chinese Students (including Hong Kong or Macao) of NTUE

Q2 How do I know if I am an International Student or Overseas Chinese Student (including students from Hong Kong or Macao)?

For International Students : according to MOE ” Regulations Regarding International Students Undertaking Studies in Taiwan”, students’ nationality who has never held Republic of China(R.O.C) nationality and does not have overseas Chinese student status at the time of their application is permitted to apply for admission to an educational institution, in accordance with these Regulation.
a. Students who before the time of the application also held dual R.O.C nationality shall have never had household registration in Taiwan.
b. Students who before the time of their application also held dual R.O.C nationality but no longer does at the time of their application shall have renounced their R.O.C nationality with the approval of the Ministry of the Interior on a date at least 8 full years before making their application.
c. Students referred to in the preceding two subparagraphs must have never previously undertaken studies in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student nor have accepted a placement by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students in the current academic year.
For Overseas Chinese Students : the term "overseas Chinese student" refers to a student of Chinese descent who has come to Taiwan to study, who was born and lived overseas until the present time, or who has been living overseas for 6 or more consecutive years in the immediate past and obtained permanent or long-term residency status overseas. The term "overseas” used in Paragraph 1 of the previous article refers to countries or regions other than Taiwan, mainland China, Macao, and Hong Kong. A person’s overseas Chinese student status must be validated by the Overseas Compatriots Affairs Commission (OCAC).
For Students from Hong Kong or Macao : Students who has a permanent residence certificate issued by governments of Hong Kong or Macao and has resided in Hong Kong or Macao or another foreign country for more than 6 consecutive years, is qualified to apply for undertaking studies in Taiwan. The terms “Overseas” aforementioned means the country or region that outside Taiwan.

Q3 If I meet the eligibility requirements for both international students and overseas Chinese students, which status should I use for application?

Students can refer to the “2020 Admission Brochure for International Students”“International Admission website of International Students”and “the 2020 Admission Brochure for Overseas Chinese Students”“NTUE the Admission website of Overseas Chinese Students (including Hong Kong or Macao)” to decide which student identity you would like to apply:
1. Tuition and miscellaneous fees : Take the Bachelor degree for example, the tuition fee and miscellaneous of overseas Chinese Student (including Hong Kong & Macao) is NTD$22,600 per semester (subject to change); For International Students total will be NTD$45,700 (subject to change), approximately two times than that of Overseas Chinese Students.
2. Scholarship : Scholarship for International Students are usually available while students are making their application, and not required any documents to submit. As long as students select the scholarship on the application system, then she/he will finish the steps.
Scholarship for international students please refer to “International Student Service” > “Degree International Students” > >“Scholarship”.
Scholarship for overseas Chinese students should submit on the first (fall) semester to Office of Student Affairs at NTUE. Please refer to the website: “Scholarship for Overseas Chinese Students” to get more information.
3. Once you choose to apply as an “Overseas Chinese Student,”, you will have to choose the channel of admission and are not allowed to shift as an International Student.

Q4 Can I apply for more than two programs?

Yes. Applicants should upload the documents required by different department after sign in the Online Application System for International Students. And if applicants want to apply two or more programs, they should fill out the personal information for more than two times and choose the programs they intend to apply for. The department will under review after applicants submits the documents.

Q5 How much should I prepared for the tuition fee, dormitory, living expenses if I am admitted to an undergraduate/postgraduate program at NTUE?

Studying in undergraduate program
International Students: Tuition and miscellaneous fee per year (2 semester): estimate NT$93,666 equivalent US$3,140.
Studying in postgraduate program
International Students: Tuition and miscellaneous fee per year (2 semester): estimate NT$105,906 equivalent US$3,550 (for the first two academic years); estimate NT$68,560 (calculate in 9 academic credits; 2,920/academic credits) equivalent US$2,295 (for the third academic year and above).

On-Campus Dormitory (undergraduate /bunk bed for 6 people) estimate NT$31,900~34,400 per year, equivalent to US$1,070~1,155.
Wo-Long Dormitory (postgraduate) estimate NT$50,400~62,400 per year, equivalent to US$1,690~2,090.
Off Campus Dormitory (individual rooms) estimate NT$8,000~16,000 per month, equivalent to US$300~600.
Living expenses: estimate NT$9,000~NT$12,000 per month, equivalent to US$300~US$400.

Q6 Does NTUE provides any scholarship for International Students? What are the eligibility requirements?

For international students, there are NTUE scholarship and Taiwan government scholarship, it’s available for both new and current international students.
New students should apply for the scholarship while they’re fill in the Online Admission; Current students should collect NTUE scholarship application form, transcript and the copy of Student ID card submit to Division of International Affairs (A709) before the end of April.

Visas / ARC Questions

Q1 I hold Resident Certificate of Taiwan, and currently learning Chinese in Chinese Language Center. I plan to stay longer in Taiwan for pursuing Bachelor/Master/Doctoral Degree, but my Resident Certificate is going to expire at the end of July. How should I do to extend my stay in Taiwan?

For those who learning Chinese at Chinese Language Center in Taiwan, he/she is currently holding the Resident Certificate for the purpose of Chinese learning (in the form of A4 size paper note “Resident Certificate” or an Alien Resident Certificate IC card). From the purpose of Chinese learning (FR visa) change to the purpose of degree-seeking student (FS visa) you need to submit the following documents to Bureau of Consular Affairs:
1. NTUE’S Admission Letter
2. Certificate of Enrollment issued by Chinese Language Center
3. Certificate of Attendance issued by Chinese Language Center
4. Student ID of the Chinese Language Center
5. Application form (Fill out the application form online and print it out)
6. Two color passport-size photos
7. Passport and one photocopy of the passport
8. Original and one photocopy of health certificate-The health certificate should be issued within 3 months by one of the local hospitals designated by the Centers for Disease Control of Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Taiwan ( Health Certificate for Residence Application ). Visit the website of the Centers for Disease Control at https://www.cdc.gov.tw/En for health checkup items and the list of designated local hospitals.
9. Original and one photocopy of proof of financial support (sufficient enough for at least a consecutive 6 months living needs)-if hold scholarship, the certificate must indicate the duration and the exact amount of the scholarship.
10. Original and one photocopy of highest education diploma and transcripts
11. Notice for tuition payment issued by the NTUE (after registration you must do the second application of the ARC replacement)

Admitted students should apply for the student resident visa at Bureau of Consular Affairs before your resident certificate go expire, then applying for the Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) through the Students Online Application System or local service center of National Immigration Agency within 15 days the resident visa issued.

Online application website ( https://coa.immigration.gov.tw/coa-frontend/student/entry ), upload the required documents and finish the application, immigration will issue a “short period electronic residence certificate (A4 size)” to you. After completing the registration procedure in NTUE but before the residence certificate expires, the applicant shall apply for a replacement with an alien residence certificate (ARC). The required documents are passport, original electronic residence certificate, and a 2-inch color photo that is front-facing, above the waist, and without wearing a hat and taken within the past 2 years (same specification as for the National Identity Card), and certificate of enrollment or student ID card.

Q2 How long can I stay on a student visitor visa?

Usually, the issued students resident visa by Taiwan overseas mission/embassy remain in Taiwan for 60 or 90 days. Extendable visas may be extended for a maximum stay up to 180 days. But if your visa is non-extendable visa or not in the purpose of student reason, the holders must leave Taiwan to obtain a new visa before the visa expire.

Q3 I was entering Taiwan on a visa-exempt, can I hold the Admission Letter of NTUE to extend my stay in Taiwan? Or can I apply for a Resident/Visitor Visa without leaving Taiwan?

No, if holders entering Taiwan on a visa-exempt, when the deadline approach, holders should leave Taiwan, they cannot apply for Resident/Visitor visa in Taiwan.

Q4 I was hold Student Resident Visa (the one stamped on passport and the purpose for Study) enter Taiwan, how shall I get the Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)?

Those who enter the R.O.C. (Taiwan) on a Resident Visa or get a Resident Visa after having arrived in the R.O.C. (Taiwan) must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate and Re-entry Permit at local service centers of National Immigration Agency. The former must apply within 15 days from the next day of arrival, and the latter must apply within 15 days from the Resident Visa issuance date. Duration of stay is noted on the Alien Resident Certificate.

No matter you’re apply for the ARC in person or online, as long as you are the Freshman with the status of “offer-received but not yet enrolled”, National Immigration Agency will issue “The electronic residence certificate valid for 6 months (A4 size)” to you, please download on your own. After completing school enrollment but before the residence certificate expires, the applicant shall apply for a replacement with an alien residence certificate (you can apply for in person or online). The required documents are passport, original electronic residence certificate, and a 2-inch color photo that is front-facing, above the waist, and without wearing a hat and taken within the past 2 years (same specification as for the National Identity Card).

Q5 I currently hold my ARC card, and changed the place I live in Taiwan, should I need to submit the relevant documents to the National Immigration Agency in the case of change of address?

Yes, it’s needed, students should modify by themselves via online (https://coa.immigration.gov.tw/coa-frontend/student/entry?lang=en) or in person to the local service center.
In the case of change of address, modifications shall be made within 15 days, and supported by necessary documents. If not, he/she shall be fined between NT$ 2,000 and NT$ 10,000.

Q6 My ARC is going to expire, but I plan to study longer in Taiwan, when shall I conduct the visa extension?

Students should extend their application within 30 days prior to the residence certificate expiration. If an alien overstays his/her permitted residence for less than 30 days and the original purpose for residence application remains unchanged, then he/she may reapply for residence subject to penalties for violations pursuant to Subparagraph 4 of Article 85. If the alien has overstayed for more than 30 days, he/she should leave the country after paying the fine. He/she may reapply for residence and reenter the country after the approval has been given.
Question to Insurance / NHI program

Q1 I am not eligible to participate in Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI), but I have purchased the Insurance for International Student (Cathay Life Medical Insurance Group Foreign students health insurance) that cost NTD$3,000 for one semester via Division of International Affairs. How do I file an insurance claim?

Students should pay the required fees of out-patient and in-patient services in advance, then collect Certificate of Diagnosis, all relevant hospital receipts, Insurance claim application form (Chinese version only, we will help you out to fill in), and copy of front cover of your post-office bank account book to Division of International Affairs (A709) office to file the claim.
Reimbursement of medical expense:
1. The maximum reimbursement for out-patient service or emergency room service claim is NT$1000.
2. Maximum reimbursement per day of in-patient care is NT$1000.
3. Maximum reimbursement for a single, continuous stay in the hospital is NT$120,000.

Q2 How can I enroll the Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI)?

The foreign nationals who with valid Alien Resident Certificate or Resident certificate for the Taiwan area must be registered in the National Health Insurance program upon living in Taiwan for 6 months (6 months of continuous residence in Taiwan or with one trip abroad not exceeding 30 days when the actual residency period of 6 months is reached after the days abroad have been deducted). Foreign students can apply to enroll in the program through NTUE (we will tell you if you’re eligible in the NHI program, and asked you to prepare all related documents).

Q3 I have been in Taiwan for a period of time, and matriculate at NTUE in September, but my NHI will expire in August, how can I do?

You shall proceed to the district office of residence to extend your enrollment in the NHI program, students shall transfer the NHI to NTUE after completing the registration.

Q4 I am graduate from school, but I plan to stay in Taiwan longer, shall I Opting-Out NHI from NTUE?

Yes, if you graduated, dismiss from school or suspension, but plan to stay in Taiwan longer, you should opting-out your NHI from school (Division of International Affairs, A709), and proceed to the district office of residence to extend your enrollment in the NHI program.
New Students FAQs

Q1 I received the Letter of Acceptance, when should I book the ticket to Taiwan?

Please refer to the Calendar 2020-2021, normally the begins of semester is on early-September and mid-February.

Q2 I’m not familiar with the surrounding environment of NTUE, is there someone can help with?

When international students arrived Taiwan, we will arrange your life buddy go airport and pick you up (due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we cancel the pick-up service of 2020/2021 academic year), and they’ll assist you in daily life assistance, complete the enrollment and registration, and give you a campus tour. In terms of learning, we also arrange a study buddy to assist you anything related to studies issue and improving your Chinese ability. If your matters are quite tricky, please go directly to Division of International Affairs (A709) seeking for help.

Q3 How to do the procedure of registration after I arrived Taiwan?

After international students arrived Taiwan, we will arrange your local buddy to pick you up at airport (we will choose a date). Then your local buddy will assist you in dorm check-in, daily life purchasing etc. On orientation day also the same date as registration (normally arrange in afternoon), please refer to the following of registration procedure.
For Exchange Students
1. Department Check-in & Course Registration – Course Registration from September 7-18, 2020
2. Submit Documents and Fee for ARC Application or Taiwan (R.O.C) Exit & Entry Permit Fee for People’s Republic of China Passport Holder Only
3. Level test for the Chinese class
4. Health Insurance - providing he/she has at least 6 months of valid medical and injury insurance. The documents should also have been verified by one of Taiwan's overseas institutes. Or enrolling Taiwan's medical insurance for six months and make a payment of NTD $3,000 by cash.
5. Submit your Registration Procedure Checklist to Division of International Affairs (DIA).
For International Students (complete and finish the Checklist before the Registration Deadline)
1. Log in to Student Academic Record website: http://t.cn/Rk0EJOm *Login information / Account: Student ID number; Password: The date of the birth
2. Passport Verification, Degree Verification and fill out the Student Comprehensive Data Record Table
3. Health and insurance - Submit valid medical and injury insurance or make a payment of NTD$3,000 by cash.
4. Hand in the tuition and miscellaneous payment receipt to the assistant and get your Student ID card
5. Freshmen Health Examination for International Students (arranged by health center at NTUE) – NTD$600 needed
6. Submit the stamp-on Registration Procedure Checklist to your department assistant.

Q4 How can I enroll the courses? How to do the manual courses adding? and how to do the credit transfer?

Before the semester begins, Division of Registration and Curriculum at NTUE will announce the notice of registration and course enrollment. The notice listed the time of course selection at each period and the course-adding & dropping period. Please refer to the website of Division of Registration and Curriculum at NTUE. For the credit transfer, please according to the "Implementation Guidelines for Student Transfer of Credits" at NTUE, following the procedure:
Fill in a “Transfer Credit Application Form (Chinese version only)" and submit it together with the following documents to the relevant department, graduate school and college for processing.
1. Chinese or English transcripts over the years and original documents of proof of credits..
2. Information required by the relevant department, graduate school, college, and by educational authorities (such as syllabi of subjects studied, proof of hours of study, certificate of courses studied, enrollment brochures, and so on).
3. Those applying for subject transfer credits with pre-enrollment credits for course taken ay overseas schools are required to attach the necessary documents that meet the “Regulations Regarding the Assessment and Recognition of Foreign Academic Credentials for Institutions of Higher Education”, “Regulations Regarding the Assessment and Recognition of Academic Credentials from Mainland China for Institutions of Higher Education”, or “Regulations Governing the Examination and Recognition of Educational Qualifications from Hong Kong and Macao”.
General Information

Q1 I can’t speak Chinese fluently, does NTUE provide short-term Chinese class for us?

If you are not a Degree-seeking (including doctoral, master, and bachelor program) or Exchange students, you can consider enrolling a Mandarin Class at Chinese Language Education Center of NTUE. It provides Chinese learning courses for students at different levels and ages. Courses including season program, personal class or Chinese summer camp. Please refer to the website of Chinese Language Education Center of NTUE (CLEC) (https://academic.ntue.edu.tw/files/11-1007-191.php), to know more course details, tuition fee, and the level test, or contact to them directly.
If you are the Degree-seeking (for Freshman) or Exchange student of NTUE, we will offer FREE Chinese class for you!
For International Student
: we will send a Letter of Acceptance for admitted students as the same time ask if you willing to participate in the free Chinese class open by the Chinese Language Education Center. If you are willing to participate in, we’ll inform you the time of class begins, the period of class and the hours it may take (normally 2 times a week, 2 hours per class). And you also will be informed the class level information via email and announcement.
For Exchange Students
: after confirmed the list of exchange students, you will be informed to take part in a level test hold by Chinese Language Education Center after orientation. And you also will be informed the class level information via email and announcement (normally 5 times a week, 3 hours per class).

Q2 I am an International Students, if I awarded the MOE, MOFA, or NTUE Scholarships, will I still be able to apply for a work permit?

Yes, for more rules and application details, please refer to the “Work Permit.

Q3 Are there any activities for International Students on-campus?

NTUE International Students Culture Exchange Society (ISCES) is a group of NTUE Students organization, they hold many on or outside campus activities for International Students each semester. We welcome our foreign students join them on Facebook Fan Page and participate in the activity.

Q4 Can I do the internship or find a job after I graduating? How do I go through the extension of my residency in Taiwan?

Please refer to “108-2 Application for Internship in Taiwan for International Student Graduates”, the maximum duration of each internship permit for overseas Chinese graduates, graduates from Hong Kong and Macao, and international student graduates is one year. For other directive, please see “Operation Directions Governing Applications from Overseas Chinese Students, Students from Hong Kong and Macao, and International Students for Internships after Graduating from University/College in Taiwan". Students should submit the application of internship at least 2 months before the expiration of your residency, then the application will under review by us.

Q5 What should I do if I lose my Student ID card?

Please download the “Student ID Card Reissuance / Replacement (Loss) Application Form" and submit to the Division of Registration, it may cost NTD$100 for handling fee.
